What sets the Origami Rose apart is its clever use of interlocking techniques and varying plane heights. This multifunctional table serves three different purposes, making it a valuable addition to any living space. Firstly, it functions as a side table or bedside table, providing a convenient surface for placing items within arm's reach. Secondly, it transforms into a desk, offering a spacious workspace for productivity. Lastly, it doubles as a bookshelf, providing storage for books and other decorative items.

The centerpiece of the Origami Rose is the opening at its center, designed specifically to accommodate a floor lamp. This thoughtful addition ensures that the table not only serves practical purposes but also enhances the ambiance of the room with its warm and inviting glow.

When it comes to the construction of the Origami Rose, Joyce Chan opted for a minimalist approach. The table is crafted from a single sheet of 4 feet by 8 feet plywood, 3/4” thick. Using a CNC machine, the plywood is cut according to Chan's precise cutsheet. Each piece is then meticulously sanded down and treated with three layers of Tung oil, providing a beautiful and durable finish. The final touch is a layer of pastewax, adding a subtle sheen to the surface.

What makes the Origami Rose even more impressive is that it is assembled solely using joinery and glue, without the need for any hardware. This not only adds to the clean and seamless aesthetic but also showcases the designer's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The Origami Rose project was a labor of love for Joyce Chan, who single-handedly brought her vision to life. From November 2012 to December 2012, she dedicated her time and expertise to perfecting every detail of this multifunctional table.

Recognized for its exceptional design and functionality, the Origami Rose was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2013. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon creations that demonstrate outstanding practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.
